Assault weapons have no place among citizenry

I am absolutely against the NRA's position on the so-called assault weapons. The NRA was formed in 1871 as an organization of sportsmen and has apparently strayed from its chartered purpose. The civilian sector has no conceivable need for weapons of the so-called assault variety, such as the AK-47 and its ilk.

When I go hunting -- which is less frequent, because there are people who will shoot at anything that moves -- I use a bolt-action rifle and have been on hunting trips when I returned with the 20-round ammo package unopened.

I firmly believe that anyone of "good character" should have the right to own a firearm, with the important provision that he or she shows evidence that he has passed a firearms safety course before taking possession of the firearm. Most of the people who sustain gunshot wounds -- and this includes policemen -- were injured by weapons when the handler thought it was empty. Ignorance is easily corrected by an infusion of knowledge, but stupidity is incurable.

While I revere the federal Constitution and its first 10 amendments, I somethings think that the Second Amendment should have read: "... the right to keep and bear muskets shall not be infringed."
