Officials plan a second audit

Local officials were to meet today to hash out details of a second, independent audit of Silver State Disposal Service's financial books, which have been called into question by federal prosecutors.

City of Las Vegas Finance Director Steve Hauchens planned to meet with his counterparts in Henderson, North Las Vegas and Clark County to coordinate the review, city spokeswoman Cathy Hanson said.

Silver State, which has a monopoly on trash collection, was accused Tuesday of cheating the Internal Revenue Service and lying about its bottom line to its customers.

The filing of formal charges has spurred government officials to call for greater financial scrutiny and determine whether the alleged fraud would have changed the current rate of $9.70 a month per household.
