Decomposed body found

A badly decomposing body of a male hiker was found in a ravine near Railroad Pass, Metro Police said.

The body was found by a hiker about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, said homicide Lt. Larry Spinosa.

About 6 a.m. today, a search-and-rescue team helicoptered the body over a mountain to a clearing off U.S. 93. A mortuary then drove the body to the coroner's office for an autopsy and identification.

The hiker appeared to have fallen into a deep ravine, broke his ankle and died from exposure, Spinosa said. The ravine is about a 45-minute walk from Railroad Pass, about 15 miles south of Las Vegas.

The body was badly decomposed and appeared to have been there about two months, he said. The victim was wearing a red sweater and carrying a backpack.
