National team event planned

"Put up or shut up" is the motto of the inaugural National Team Championship, a golf tournament that will determine an amateur national team champion.

Representatives from more than 300 golf clubs from 42 states (including Nevada) and Japan have expressed an interest in sending their top amateur golfers to compete in the 54-hole scratch tournament.

Each four-player team will compete in one of 12 qualifying tournaments from May through September 1996 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The three-day qualifying events will consist of 54 holes of stroke play and scoring will be two best-balls (scratch) of the foursome.

Approximately 15 percent of the teams from each qualifying tournament will be eligible to compete in the finals, scheduled for December 1996 in Scottsdale. The finals will follow the same format as the qualifying event, with the winning team claiming the title of America's top amateur team.

The courses that will be used for the finals are Troon North Golf Club and Grayhawk Golf Club. The qualifying rounds will be held at Troon North's Monument and Pinnacle courses and Grayhawk's Talon and Raptor courses.

The entry fee for the tournament is $720 per player or $2,880 per team and includes golf fees, rental car, luxury accommodations at the Resort Suites of Scottsdale, tee prizes, daily breakfast, evening cocktails and awards.

The National Team Championship is sanctioned by the International Golf Association, Pacific Coast Golf Association and the Arizona Golf Association. Call 1-800-216-3386 for additional information.
