Police Report Shots Fired at McQueen High School, Student Killed

Lindsay Alba, a sophomore at McQueen High School, was shot and killed Monday while sitting with two other students in a car across the street from the school.

Investigators said one of the youths found a .22-caliber rifle in the car and the gun discharged, hitting her in the chest. She staggered out of the car, then collapsed to the ground.

She was taken to Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead about 90 minutes after the 11:40 a.m. shooting.

A 15-year-old male was questioned and later released with no charges being filed. He was placed in the back of a patrol car while officers deciphered details of the incident.

"He has pretty traumatic feelings right now," Reno Police Lt. Ken Bunker said of the suspected shooter.

Police Lt. Rick Saulnier said the incident is still under investigation, adding that the case would be submitted to the Washoe County district attorney's office to determine if criminal charges are filed.

School officials elected to keep classes in session Monday afternoon, although some pupils went home to be with their parents.

Counselors were called in to meet with pupils who needed somebody to talk with.

Several McQueen students were in the area during a lunch period when they heard the shot from the car.

"We heard gun pops," an unidentified girl told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "She was telling everybody she was shot.

"We thought it was an April Fool's joke. She was on the ground."
