Where I Stand

Hank Greenspun

Sun publisher Hank Greenspun.

Today, Saturday, July 1, is a memorable day for the entire staff of the old Free Press and now - The Morning Sun.

We have taken a long step forward by going into the daily field on such short notice, but we feel it is justified by the generous response of the community in supporting the new ownership of this newspaper.

The subscription list is mounting at a most gratifying rate. The merchants, hotels, businesses both large and small have welcomed us with more than mere words; real tangible evidence of their desire to have another newspaper.

This reception, instead of elating us, makes us feel very humble. It gives us a sense of responsibility experienced by persons who are suddenly cast in a role where serving the people becomes a sacred trust.

To try to meet this obligation, we have assembled a staff which we believe will respond to their tasks in a manner worthy of their assignment.

The entire staff are local residents who have lived here for many years, raised families, either bought their own homes or are still hoping and trying to do so.

These men know the background of our town, the people and their problems, they know the men who have held and still hold public office.

Our staff here takes an interest in our town because it is our town. Our children have been born here and, God willing, will be raised here.

This staff has been chosen without regard to political affiliation. Whether in the editorial, advertising, general administrative section or composing room, the only qualification necessary for the job was, can they get the news fairly and impartially, can they get the advertising, the circulation, can they do their job? I believe they can, I am sure you will agree.

You will get a chance to meet the entire staff, pictures and all in a later edition but you can be assured, it is the best staff assembled for the good of our community. We cannot promise that we will please you in all respects; no living human can please everyone. But we can and shall try.

One pledge the entire staff joins in making, is that we will try to make this newspaper representative of the people of Southern Nevada; we will try to make it your newspaper.
