For more than 50 years, the Las Vegas Art Museum has been devoted to displaying works of emerging contemporary artists. Since its commencement, LVAM has been noted as the premier art museum in Southern Nevada.

The Las Vegas Art Museum began in 1950 when a small group of visionaries had a goal of bringing contemporary art to Las Vegas, forming the Las Vegas Art League. In 1974, the League was renamed the Las Vegas Art Museum, becoming the first fine art museum in Nevada. The museum now resides in the Sahara West Library/Fine Art museum building since 1997.

Recent exhibitions include, “A survey of Southern California Minimalists, including Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, and James Turrell; solo exhibitions by artists Michael Reafsnyder, Martin Mull, and Cindy Wright; a comprehensive survey of Roy Lichtenstein’s prints; an exhibition of models by the architect Frank Gehry; the three-dimensional paintings of Kaz Oshiro; and an exhibition curated by art critic Dave Hickey featuring artists who studied with him at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas," according to the Las Vegas Art Museum Web site.

From May to October 2008, the museum will be displaying “Las Vegas Collects Contemporary," a exhibit of private, contemporary collections in Las Vegas. Artists include Andy Warhol, David Reed, Damien Hirst and several others.

The Las Vegas Art Museum holds tours of exhibitions every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. These tours are provided by LVAM’s Docent Educators, free of charge with the price of admission. The museum also hosts adult tours for those who wish to explore further into contemporary art. These tours are available by appointment only, Tuesday through Sunday.

Family tours at LVAM are designed to create a dialog about art with children and parents. They are approximately 30 minutes long and cost $7 per family. To schedule a family tour, contact [email protected].
