Henderson Teens Earn Rank As Eagle Scouts

Published on Wed, Apr 2, 2014 (11:15 a.m.)

Zachary Sellen, son of Midbar Kodesh Temple members David and Rona Sellen and Aaron Winkler, son of Midbar Kodesh Temple members Steven and Sharon Winkler, were recently recognized for their achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout at the synagogue, among friends, family, scouts, leaders and families of BSA Troop 931 of Henderson, as well as representatives from Midbar Kodesh Temple’s Men's Club, The Jewish War Veterans, Boy Scout Las Vegas Area Council, The BSA Order of the Arrow and The Jewish Committee on Scouting. All of these groups have supported these two Eagle Scouts since they were Cub Scouts. Rabbi Bradley Tecktiel offered the opening prayer and invocation. The beautiful candle lit ceremony, led by the Green Bar Scouts of Troop 931, who recognized two of their Scouts as Eagle Scouts, was held in Midbar Kodesh Temple’s social hall.

Zachary and Aaron are among only 3% of Boy Scouts who ever progress far enough in scouting to complete the rank of Eagle. Ten years ago these two young men started together as Cub Scouts in Pack 713 at Midbar Kodesh Temple and were fortunate to have amazing leaders, many of whom are Eagle Scouts themselves. They have had the support of many organizations including the Men’s Club at MKT which provided supplies or assisted in raising funds which allowed the Pack to grow into a Jewish Scout Troop. When the Scouts needed a new Troop they were welcomed into Troop 931 where they received continued guidance by several knowledgeable and skilled leaders.

These two amazing young men have achieved this enormous accomplishment through perseverance and determination. Both boys devoted a tremendous amount of their time and skill to achieve this rank, said Rabbi Tecktiel. “When you meet them, talk to them and hear about their plans for the future, you can immediately tell the affect the Boy Scouts have had on these two teens. Zachary and Aaron are driven, focused and balanced. We are very proud of them,” he said. Aaron is completing his senior year in high school in June and will be starting College in August 2014, studying his chosen career of aerospace engineering. Zachary will be moving on to his senior year in high school and continues to make great strides in Civil Air Patrol.
