Kalamazoo joins ECHL

The ECHL announced Tuesday that the Kalamazoo Wings will become the 23rd team in the ECHL.

The Wings, which spent the last two seasons in the International Hockey League, have played in Kalamazoo since 1974. The team competes in the 5,113-seat Wings Stadium.

Kalamazoo will join the North Division in the American Conference along with Cincinnati, Elmira, Johnstown, Toledo and Wheeling. The American Conference now has 14 teams, while the National Conference has nine.

The Wings are owned by Stadium Management Company and are coached by former Kalamazoo player Nick Bootland. Bootland led the Wings to a 44-29-3 record last season.
