Oratory as background noise

(A team of Sun reporters is at the Republican National Convention this week in St. Paul.)

ST. PAUL, Minn. — An unfortunate aspect of these conventions, both Democrat and Republican, is that you often wind up with people making important speeches, interesting speeches, compelling speeches, while no one listening.

Or few people anyway.

For the most part, people are milling around, chatting, with backs turned, while some woman who built a pretzel empire is saying the following: To give is to live. To whom much is given, much is required. We must continue to be a giving nation. Etc. Now she's saying John McCain will help us give hope to the hopeless, courage to the weak, etc.
