Vegas Play of the Day: Kansas vs. Wichita State

NCAA New Mexico State Kansas Basketball

Kansas forward Jamari Traylor drives up court past New Mexico State forward Remi Barry during the first half of an NCAA tournament basketball game in the Round of 64 on Friday, March 20, 2015, in Omaha, Neb.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Kansas minus-1 vs. Wichita State: $660 to win $600 Wichita State is viewed by some as the Kansas basketball team’s little brother. They play today in the NCAA Tournament third round, which is the first meeting since 1993 for the schools located two and ½ hours apart (Kansas is avoiding them, Wichita State supporters say).

Kansas has the championship banners and rich tradition. But Wichita State, of late, is also thriving. Two years ago, it reached the Final Four. Last year, the Shockers were undefeated until March.

One of my sports betting theories is to back the team with more tradition, regardless of the sport. When that team only needs to win the game to cover the spread, it’s time to increase the bet. Kansas has better players and a better coach. It played a tougher schedule.

While Kansas looked flawed entering the tournament, the Jayhawks sure looked like a perennial power in their opener, a 19-point win against New Mexico State. Wichita State prevailed in a back-and-forth game against Indiana in its opener, and junior guard Ron Baker said it’s the most tired he’d been after a game. Baker and guard Fred VanVleet spent the off day relaxing and rehydrating for the quick turnaround.

Our Talking Points blog is a perfect 3-0 in NCAA Tournament bets. I also cashed on a postseason game Tuesday. Get on the bandwagon while we are hot!
