Vegas Play of the Day: Adrien Broner vs. Shawn Porter

Open Workouts at Mayweather Boxing Club

Boxer Adrien Broner takes a few minutes to sign some autographs for fans during an open workout day at the Mayweather Boxing Club on Tuesday, June 16, 2015.

The South Point-lined Play of the Day has stayed out of the ring for too long.

I’m putting my $10,000 starting bankroll up for a fight this evening.

Adrien Broner plus-110 vs. Shawn Porter: $350 to win $385

Here’s a hypothetical to ponder while analyzing this betting line: What would have happened if Broner never lost to Marcos Maidana? I’d venture to guess he’d be a bare minimum minus-200 favorite in this matchup.

Broner was the closest thing to a can’t-miss prospect in the sport for his entire career until doubt crept into everyone’s minds after the loss. It’s now resulted in a discount in his biggest fight since the Maidana loss.

Porter is an animal, an aggressive and dangerous fighter, but his loss to Kell Brook and draw against Julio Diaz stick out more than Broner’s Maidana mishap. Porter’s potential isn’t as high as Broner’s.

Broner is faster and longer, two major advantages he’s likely built a game plan around. He also insisted on a rehydration clause where the bigger Porter, who’s said to normally enter the ring at around 160 pounds, can’t weigh more than 154 pounds today.

Several small factors lining up on Broner’s side should add up to one big victory.

Standings: Bern (84-73-1, $11,405), Keefer (82-83-2, $9,022), Brewer (71-88-3, -$415)
