There are 234 days between tonight’s national championship game and the first college football game of next season.

Better make it count. That’s our intention in the South Point-lined Play of the Day, which started with $10,000 starting bankrolls.

Ohio State plus-6.5 vs. Oregon: $440 to win $400

I’ve already written several hundred words on this game, so I’ll keep it concise: Both these teams are terrific. So terrific that neither the Ducks nor the Bucks deserve to lay more than three or four points.

Everyone came away so consumed with Oregon’s 39-point over victory over Florida State in the semifinals that Ohio State’s touchdown triumph against Alabama was lessened. It was just as impressive.

There’s no doubt Alabama was the deserved No. 1 seed going into the Sugar Bowl. There’s no doubt that Ohio State rolling up 537 yards on a Nick Saban defense was one of the greatest feats in the last few years.

Alabama had given up less than three yards per rushing attempt before the game and proceeded to surrender more than seven to Ohio State. If Ezekiel Elliott had 230 yards on 20 carries against Alabama, there’s no telling what he could do against an average Oregon rush defense.

There’s nothing ordinary about the Ducks’ offense. They’re going to score, but the Buckeyes have enough to keep up.

The points are the play in the final college football game of the year.
