Vegas Play of the Day: Kansas State vs. UCLA in Alamo Bowl

College Football Picks Oct. 18, 2013

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley passes during the first half of the Bruins’ game against California on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, in Pasadena, Calif.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Kansas State plus-1 against UCLA in Alamo Bowl: $550 to win $500 : Kansas State has been one of college football’s most underrated teams this season. UCLA has been one of the most overrated, especially quarterback Brett Hundley.

Kansas State’s defense will make Hundley’s last UCLA game a miserable experience. The defense gives up just 21.8 points per game to rank 25th nationally in points allowed — that’s impressive considering K-State plays in the high-scoring Big 12 Conference.

Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters has completed 74-percent of his passes for 3,163 yards and 20 touchdowns, also rushing for nearly 500 yards and eight scores.

Those are nearly identical numbers to Hundley, a redshirt junior who intends to enter the NFL Draft after the Alamo Bowl. Most of Hundley’s good performances, though, have come in meaningless games. Against Stanford’s quality defense in UCLA’s regular season finale, Hundley completed just 17 of 32 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. I expect a similar effort against Kansas State.

UCLA (9-3) was lucky to win against Memphis, Virginia and Colorado — not exactly a who’s who of programs. They won’t be as fortunate against Kansas State.

Standings: Bern (61-52-1, $11,526), Keefer (57-60-2, $9,227), Brewer (54-58-3, $6,305)
