Vegas Play of the Day: Pittsburgh at Philly

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Pittsburgh Pirates (-130) at Philadelphia Phillies: $650 to win $500 : Philadelphia starter Jerome Williams was back to his old ways in his most recent start, allowing nine hits and five runs in five innings against Washington. Look for him to be equally awful today against Pittsburgh.

Prior to the start, he had four quality outings after being claimed off waivers from Texas, including pitching into the eighth inning in consecutive appearances and giving up just one run. It couldn’t last.

Williams has a 5.45 earned run average and should serve up plenty of good pitches to the Pirates, who are fighting for a wild card playoff spot. Full disclosure: I’m a Pirates fan. While you can argue being a fan clouds my handicapping, I will argue it gives me an edge, because I know the team. The Pirates hit right-handed pitchers well, especially pitchers like Williams, who doesn't have dynamic stuff.

I expect a close game, which also plays into Pittsburgh’s favor. They have one of the best bullpens in baseball.

Standings: Bern (45-35-1, $12,967), Keefer (40-43, $9,982), Brewer (34-44-3, $3,600)
