Vegas Play of the Day: Monday Night Football

Bills-Giants

Associated Press

New York Giants wide receiver Marcus Harris (18) tries to break away from Buffalo Bills defensive back Mario Butler (30) after Harris caught a pass in the second quarter at the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition NFL football game Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, in Canton, Ohio.

Our first stab at a three-pack of the Play of the Day turned out profitable.

The Sun’s sports staff went 2-1 using the South Point odds, with Ray Brewer and myself cashing on our selections while Taylor Bern narrowly fell short. To catch Bern with our $10,000 starting bankroll, we’ll need to stay hot.

New York Giants plus-6 at Detroit Lions: $330 to win $300

Nine months ago, the Giants arrived in Detroit completely broken. They were stricken with more injuries than any team in the NFL and had nothing to play for.

The Lions, meanwhile, were mostly healthy and fighting for an NFC North division crown. New York hung with Detroit the whole game and, ultimately, won in overtime.

The Giants come to Ford Field in much better shape to start 2014. They’ve got their full complement of players and a new offense to boot.

So why is no one giving them a chance on Monday Night Football? Ticket count is around 3-to-1 in favor of the Lions, which failed to win or cover in each of their final four games last season.

Sure, they’ve undergone a lot of changes since then. But the most significant one, hiring coach Jim Caldwell, was far from awe-inspiring.

Dating back to his days at Wake Forest, Caldwell has always been a bet-against. And he’s still a bet-against.

Standings: Bern (45-34-1, $13,387), Keefer (40-42, $10,312), Brewer (34-44-3, $3,600)
