Opening lines: Thursday Night Football looms large at sports books

In this Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, file photo, San Diego Chargers linebacker Thomas Keiser celebrates after intercepting a pass by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game in Denver.

The cries deriding Thursday Night Football as an unnecessary part of the NFL’s schedule project to decline this week.

Although research proves the theory incorrect, football fans have faddishly pronounced midweek games sloppy and questioned whether they should continue in the past couple years.

No one’s going to protest this Thursday, however, when two of the top six teams in Super Bowl future odds meet. The Denver Broncos, the Super Bowl favorite at 7-to-2 odds according to the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook, host the San Diego Chargers, 10-to-1 to win the Super Bowl, at 5:20 Thursday.

Denver posted as a 6.5-point favorite Sunday evening at CG Technologies, the first sports books to open betting on the full slate of college and NFL games for the next week.

San Diego, which fell to 5-2 on the season with a 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs as 3.5-point favorites Sunday, were the only team to defeat Denver at Sports Authority Field last year. The linchpin of the Chargers’ late push into the 2013-2014 playoffs came in week 15 when they upset the Broncos 27-20 as 10-point underdogs on the road.

Denver earned revenge with a 24-17 victory as 8-point favorites in the divisional round of the postseason. But, for the third straight meeting between the teams, the point spread decreases Thursday.

It’s uncommon for the biggest game of the week to land on Thursday, but that might be the case with the two AFC West rivals in week 8 of the NFL. The other candidate is a clash between 5-1 teams with the Philadelphia Eagles traveling to take on the Arizona Cardinals.

CG Technologies installed the betting line as Philadelphia plus-2 for the afternoon tilt next Sunday.
