Vegas Play of the Day: ALCS Game 1

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles under-7 runs: $440 to win $400

Both the Royals and Orioles swept through their respective division series, leaving them with nearly a week off before meeting in tonight’s ALCS Game 1. That is if the likely thunderstorms leave them alone long enough to get in a few innings.

While I’ll be attending UNLV’s home football game tonight, there are TVs there, so I’m hoping this game is played. Plus, that possibility of inclement weather is one reason I’m playing the under. If they’re able to only play six or seven innings before calling the game — unlikely but a possibility — then the odds certainly favor my side.

Then there’s the pitching. Chris Tillman has been a workhorse for the Orioles, giving up more than four earned runs only once since June 6. A lot of those games still went over because of Baltimore’s offense, but with all they’ve lost throughout the year — first Matt Wieters, then Manny Machado and then Chris Davis — they can’t count on the same kind of run support each night, especially against the Royals’ James Shields.

While Shields hasn’t been as consistent as Tillman, he’s been the Royals’ ace, and I like him to come up big in this spot tonight.
