Vegas Play of the Day: Atlanta of the WNBA at San Antonio

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Atlanta Dream of WNBA at San Antonio. Total Over 161.5: $550 to win $500 : I love playing WNBA games over. Unlike the NBA, the players compete hard from start to finish, and there’s no going through the motions late in games if the outcome is already decided.

Atlanta is the third-highest scoring team in the league, scoring at least 80 points in five of its last six games. The Dream lead the league in rebounding, getting more than their share of second-chance points.

San Antonio, a team I played over the points total last week in this handicapping contest, is one of the WNBA’s lowest-scoring teams. But eight of their last 10 games have gone over the total, and they’ll need to score to keep up with Atlanta, the first-place team in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference. Atlanta is a 2-point betting favorite, meaning oddsmakers expect a close game. That means free throws at the end to push the game over the total.
