UNLV’s Khem Birch swats the ball away from Southern Utah’s Jaren Jeffery during their game Saturday Dec. 14, 2013, in Cedar City, Utah.

Our Talking Points blog is offering a daily sports betting pick against the point spread using odds from the South Point.

We started the feature last week; I’m still searching for my first cover. Be patient with me, folks. If anything, try betting against me.

Here’s my pick for today.

Idaho State minus-19 against visiting Southern Utah: $330 to win $300. While there’s not much to like about asking five-win Idaho State to win by 20 or more points, I’m willing to lay the chalk against Southern Utah.

Southern Utah is the worst team in college basketball, according to the Ken Pomeroy rankings. Yep, dead last in a ranking of 341 teams. Idaho State is No. 230.

Southern Utah scored just 36 points earlier this week at home in losing to Northern Arizona, 70-36. Just twice this season Southern Utah has covered the spread in 12 games on the betting board; Idaho State has covered its past three games. It’s fair to assume Southern Utah won’t bring its best effort, and even if it does, it will be significantly outmatched.

Idaho State senior guard Andre Hatchett is averaging 15.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and will be the best player on the court. Southern Utah is young in its backcourt with a pair of freshmen from Las Vegas — Trey Kennedy and Juwan Major — playing significant minutes. They’ll be overwhelmed against Hatchett.

Standings: Bern (1-2, $9,430), Brewer (0-1-1, $9,320), Keefer (1-3, $9,175)
