51s can’t rally for a third straight day

The Las Vegas 51s couldn’t produce another ninth-inning comeback Monday afternoon.

They were defeated 8-5 by the New Orleans Zephyrs at Cashman Field, falling to score in the ninth after rallying for final-inning victories the past two days.

They scored four runs in the ninth Saturday against Oklahoma City to erase a three-run deficit and plated five runs in the ninth Sunday to overcome a four-run deficit.

But New Orleans closer Nate Field retired three of the four Las Vegas batters he faced in the ninth for his second save.

Alejandro De Aza had a three-run double in the eighth inning to snap a five-all tie and give New Orleans a win in the first game of a four-game series.

New Orleans scored four runs in the third inning and never trailed. Howie Clark had two-run double for Las Vegas in its half of the third and finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Bucks Coats and Angel Sanchez each had two hits and two runs scored for the 51s.

The second game of the series is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
