51s blow lead against Portland

The Las Vegas 51s squandered a five-run lead against the Portland Beavers Friday night, giving up six runs in the eighth inning of a 9-8 defeat.

Portland’s Kyle Blanks clubbed a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the eighth to cap the outburst and give the Beavers three victories in four games at Las Vegas. Portland’s Eliezer Alfonzo also hit a home run in the eighth.

Las Vegas scored two runs in the third inning and four runs in fourth to lead 6-1. Buck Coats and Angel Sanchez had RBI singles in the fourth, and Randy Ruiz had a RBI double in the third.

Ruiz lead the 51s with three doubles while Coats had three hits and two runs scored.

Portland shortstop Sean Kazmar, a Las Vegas High graduate, went 1-for-4 with a single and run scored.

Las Vegas hosts the Tacoma Rainiers, the Seattle Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, for a four-game series starting at 7 p.m. Saturday.
