Couture hosting charity poker tourney today at Golden Nugget

Randy Couture may be one of the baddest men on the planet, but when it comes to the military the former UFC champ has a big soft spot in his heart. Like several GI events he’s hosted in the past, Couture, a veteran of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, will be the main man today at second annual “Operation All In” poker tournament that takes place at 2 p.m. at the Golden Nugget.

Instant replay in boxing and MMA bouts approved by athletic commission

Nevada could start using instant replay in boxing and mixed martial arts within a month to help referees review crucial or controversial moments at the end of fights. The Nevada Athletic Commission approved limited use of the technology to help referees review hits that end fights, including knockouts and hits like low blows or head-butts if they cause the match to end because of injury.

UFC’s counter-programming outdraws Strikeforce show (sort of)

No doubt the biggest fight in female mixed martial arts history Saturday night was quite the successful event as Strikeforce’s bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos drew 13,524 fans to HP Pavilion in San Jose for an estimated live gate of $750,000. But the show airing on Showtime played second fiddle to UFC’s counter-programming of the promotion’s historic UFC 100 event from July (well, depending on how you view the ratings).

Pavlik’s infected hand delays fight with Williams

Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik’s title defense against Paul Williams has been postponed because of a persistent infection in his left hand. Pavlik was scheduled to fight Williams at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Oct. 3. Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said the company now expects the fight to be held Nov. 21 or Dec. 5 in the same arena on HBO, but Williams promoter Dan Goossen says he hasn’t agreed to anything yet.

Couture signs on with EA Sports

At last Randy Couture can have the dream fight he always wanted, the only problem is the format he’ll be battling Fedor Emelianenko will be set on an electronic stage. The UFC legend announced Saturday that he will appear in EA Sports’ “MMA” video game set to be released sometime in 2010, joining the Russian heavyweight Emelianenko and other non-UFC notables Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Gegard Mousasi.

Victorino files police report after beer shower

Police charged a 21-year-old man with two misdemeanor counts Thursday in connection with a beer-throwing incident that showered Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino(notes). John Macchione of Bartlett, Ill., was charged with one count of battery and one count of illegal conduct within a sports facility, according to police. They did not know if Macchione had an attorney. A man who answered the phone at a listing for a John Macchione in Bartlett hung up on a reporter seeking comment.

WBC sanctions Dawson vs. Johnson rematch

The World Boxing Council sanctioned the Nov. 7 bout between undefeated light heavyweight Chad Dawson (28-0, 17 KO) and former world champion Glen Johnson (49-12-2, 33 KO) for its interim light heavyweight title Thursday. The fight is the second meeting between the two, the first resulting in a unanimous decision win for Dawson in April 2008.
