Whodat? It’s your Las Vegas 51s

51s Media Day

An e-mail conversation before the home opener:

Thinking of going to the 51s opener tonight -- if the weather holds up.

Are they still the 51s?

This week. After the Dodgers pulled their franchise out of town, the owners didn’t have the guts to bring in an awful group of minor leaguers from Toronto AND change the name too. They want to (and will, at some point) change the name back to the Stars. I know that a lot of people don’t like the name 51s, but at least it has some character -- it plants tongue firmly in cheek.

Me, I like "51s." Great name. "Stars"? I don't think so.

It’s a huge copout. Stars was the name of the original Pacific Coast League team in Hollywood. Now that makes sense. But calling them the Las Vegas Guys Who You’ve Never Heard Of But You’ve Seen Their Giant Mugs On Billboards probably wouldn’t fit on the backs of the uniforms or in the agate standings.

Come to think of it, I like the idea of the Las Vegas Whos? “Now batting for your Las Vegas Whos?, No. 62, Lou Hu.” They could play The Who’s “Overture to Tommy” to begin games. And instead of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at the seventh inning, they could play Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s On First?” And they wouldn’t even have to change mascots. They could just buy Cosmo a mask.

Details: Las Vegas 51s vs. Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 7:05 tonight Saturday and Monday, 12:05 p.m. Sunday, Cashman Field, $9-$14, www.lv51.com.
