Spring football back in black

I see where the top player at UNLV football practice is going to be awarded a black jersey that he gets to wear the next day at practice.

Sort of like that Tour de France thing.

You’ve got to hand it to coach Mike Sanford. If there’s a gimmick that has been tried elsewhere, he’s willing to try it here. Black shirts in practice, pounding tires with sledge hammers, refusing to identify a rival by name … anything to keep it interesting, I guess. And Lord knows spring football practice isn’t very interesting.

But one gimmick he might consider reprising this fall, considering he’s 6-29 as UNLV’s head coach and the Rebels have had only three winning seasons in the past 21 years, is beating Colorado State.
