Future Rebel part of hoops thriller in Germany

UNLV basketball recruit Oscar Bellfield was part of a thrilling 102-101 victory Thursday by a U.S. select youth team over Spain in Mannheim, Germany.

Bellfield, a 6-foot-3 guard from Los Angeles Westchester High, had nine points, four rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes.

The star of the evening was Erving Walker, a 5-6 guard from Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ the King who has committed to Florida.

He finished with 32 points, and his final two were most important. Spain missed two shots, and Walker answered with a coast-to-coast layup with 14 seconds remaining for the final margin.

The U.S. forced a turnover by Spain to end the game.

Early on, a dunk by Bellfield helped the Americans overcome a 10-point deficit and get to within three points of the Spaniards. He has given an oral commitment to Rebels coach Lon Kruger, and the national spring signing period begins April 16.

The Albert Schweitzer international youth tournament is considered to be an unofficial Under-18 world championship in Europe.

The U.S., coached by former NBA player Lionel Hollins, plays Turkey on Friday night in one semifinal. In the other, Greece plays Australia. The final is scheduled for Saturday.
