Memorial for Sports Writer

A memorial for Las Vegas sports and gaming writer Lynda Collins is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Dome Sports Lounge at the Plaza hotel-casino downtown.

Friends, co-workers and readers are welcome at the gathering.

Collins died from complications of pneumonia last weekend at Spring Valley Hospital. She was 61.

A native of the Chicago area, Collins began covering sports and the betting scene for the Las Vegas Review-Journal in the early 1980s. In recent years she had been writing online for gaming Web sites including Vegas Insider and View From Vegas.

Funeral services have yet to be scheduled. Collins had expressed a wish to be cremated and have her ashes scattered at the former Comiskey Park and Del Mar Racetrack, according to Dave Tuley of View From Vegas.

To honor Collins' love of animals, her family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of the United States.
