Quintrell Thomas down to two schools?

Ryan Greene and Rob Miech sit down after a brief hiatus to discuss all that has happened in the world of Rebels hoops since the end of a disappointing season. Among the topics are the passing of 'Gondo', another defection and some potential newcomers. Plus, is being labeled 'Transfer U.' such a bad thing?

Former Kansas forward Quintrell Thomas, who over the weekend made an official visit to UNLV in his quest for a new collegiate home, may have narrowed his list of potential destinations to two.

Thomas, who averaged 1.5 points and 2 rebounds per game in a limited role as a freshman for the Jayhawks, has already visited St. Joseph's and UNLV, and told the Sun a week ago that he planned on heading to Siena this weekend.

However, multiple attempts to reach the New Jersey native since he returned to Lawrence, Kan., from his visit have gone unanswered.

Jeff Goodman of foxsports.com, though, in his blog indicated that Thomas may be set to choose between just UNLV and St. Joe's.

Goodman attributed an anonymous source close to the situation.

Following the departure of DeShawn Mitchell from the program last month, Lon Kruger has two scholarships to give for next season.

  1. Come to Vegas, Quintrell. With Jasper, Stanback, Marshall, Bellfield, Willis, Lopez, Hawkins, Massamba... It can be a fun ride.

  2. He will be here. There is no doubt about that.

  3. Thanks for the update.

I know it's only a blog, but if he is down to us and Saint Joseph's I would have to think he's coming to UNLV unless his only motivating factor is to be closer to home.

Interesting note about St. Joe's: After winning the A10 regular season in 2005, they've had the exact same conference record (9-7) every year for the last 4 years.

Needless to say, they've had no ncaa appearances in that span. If Kruger and staff want Quintrell and we lose out to Saint Joesph's. . .

Well, let all of us Rebel fans hope that it hasn't come to that. Again though, if he's homesick and wants to be near his family that's a different story.

  4. TRUE_FAN, I have only talked to Quintrell for a total of about 3 minutes in the past week or so in one phone conversation, but I'd guess that the 'closer to home' thing will be the ultimate deciding factor. I think he'd be an equally solid fit at either spot. I think it's natural for a guy from Jersey to want to look at a couple of schools closer to home, especially since he probably has more connections there. However, UNLV has probably a longer-standing relationship with him than the other schools he's targeting. Not sure why, but my gut tells me he'll end up with the Rebels, and the staff more than likely will leave the other scholarship open for the 2010 class. Obviously, UNLV is hot on the trails of Findlay's Godwin Okonji, plus this will leave an option to go after another kid -- or two, should someone else leave between now and then.

  5. Okonji has already expressed interest in UNLV but they hadn't offered him anything. So, now Kruger is hot on his trails? Are you sure about that, Ryan? Last I heard Kruger wasn't interested in Okonji.

  6. I think the Okonji thing is a "stay away" situation. Kruger doesn't need anymore "projects with promise." QT should be the target. I think he lands at UNLV.
