Diamond Head Classic lineup almost set; includes UNLV, USC

According to The Honolulu Advertiser, the field for next winter's inaugural Diamond Head Classic is near completion.

The 8-team tourney, set for Dec. 22, 23 and 25, is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television and will take place around the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.

Already set for the field is UNLV, Southern Cal, College of Charleston and host Hawai'i.

Pete Dervis, vice president of ERT, did not provide a comment to The Advertiser, and said he would not do so until the field is complete. He said that seven teams are under contract and an eighth is "close."

Teams are allowed to play in one "exempted" tournament each year and the same tourney once every four years, but may play in different ones each year.

This past season, the Rebels played host to the Global Sports Classic over Thanksgiving Weekend, which also included California-Berkeley, Florida State and Cincinnati.

The Diamond Head Classic replaces the Rainbow Classic in the Christmas slot. The Rainbow Classic, formerly and 8-team event, moves to earlier in the year and will involve only four teams, including Hawai'i, which owns and operates it.

The matchups for the Diamond Head Classic are expected to be announced before the summer.
