UNLV to face SMU in Diamond Head Classic opener on Dec. 22

UNLV will begin its week in paradise over Christmas with a showdown against SMU in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu on Dec. 22.

The game will take place at the Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus, and the event will include 12 games over 3 days, airing on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Outside of the Rebels and Mustangs, the field includes College of Charleston, Hawai'i, Northeastern, Saint Mary's, Southern Cal and Western Michigan.

Other first-round matchups include Western Michigan facing USC, Northeastern taking on Saint Mary's and College of Charleston doing battle with Hawai'i.

All four first-round games will air on ESPNU.

The day off on Dec. 24 will be followed with a championship game on Dec. 25 at 6:30 p.m. PST, airing on ESPN2.

SMU went 9-21 a year ago, was 3-13 in Conference USA and is led by former North Carolina coach Matt Doherty, who enters his fourth season at the helm in Dallas.
