Players on championship team always worked hard

It was great getting everyone back together from the national championship team the last few days for a reunion.

They are just wonderful kids and the community has seen over the years how great they are.

I have said this many times, but you couldn’t ask for a better group of people in terms of loyalty and working hard. They were a tough group of kids who gave me everything they had.

It always bothered me how some people in the administration at the school thought negatively about those kids.

That was far from the truth. They were a great group and so loyal to me. Just some great human beings.

We played so hard. No one in the country played as hard as we did. Other coaches would always talk about how hard my guys played.

As for the game, a lot of people were disappointed with how UNLV performed last night.

But it was just the first game.

I always felt you can’t judge a team on the first game because the kids have been waiting all year to get out and play in front of a crowd.

They will be a good team. They work hard, they play good defense and they are well coached. They just couldn’t hit their 3-pointers.

I think Lon (Kruger) has a deeper team than any team we had. I think they are deeper, but I don’t think they are as good. Everyone on his team is a player whereas we never had that many great players.

I liked the new uniforms. The team looked great.

Our players used to set a lot of trends for Nike and they loved that about us. David Butler came to me one day and asked if he could wear black shoes because it shows how hard it is to play under the basket.

I told him I didn’t care as long as everyone (on UNLV) wore black shoes. Next thing you know, other teams were wearing black shoes, too.

I couldn’t sign autographs at last night’s exhibition game because I still have limited movement in my arm. I felt bad because some kids ask me to sign and I just couldn’t. It would have been scribble because of the surgeries I’ve had on my shoulder.

My recovery is going well. I feel as good as I have felt since the summer. Thanks for the well wishes from my fans.

  1. Hey Tark, where was LJ last night.

  2. Coach Tark - in the foreward of your book, Runnin' Rebel, Coach Bobby Knight delivered insight to that very subject - your kids playing outside their comfort zones constantly for you.

In the beginning of Lon's tenure, I used to think he didn't demand that from his kids. I became educated and realized he always does.

The question is: Why do you think they (most of today's kids) don't play outside their comfort zones? Do they not care for coaches as much as your kids did (and do) for you? Do they have a stronger desire for playing Xbox, perhaps?

  3. Foreword, sorry.

  4. Grayback: I will make sure to ask coach your questions the next time we talk, probably at the end of next week. ...As for Larry Johnson, coach wasn't certain where he was last night. I'm sure Larry was with everyone in spirit. Coach Tark really loves Larry and raves about their relationship.

  5. How could Tark be "uncertain" about where LJ--the heart and SOUL of that team-- was?

I love LJ...LOVE LJ...but, really, he couldn't show up for THAT? I hope he has a fantastic excuse.

  6. LJ was at paradise cantina right before the game... has to be a legit excuse, no way he wanted to miss the celebration.

  7. i saw lj out at 'vegas natl golf course awhile back,he was very congenial

  8. rebelred22,
is Tark supposed to have a leash on LJ?

  9. We love you coach. As Always, we look forward to the next addition of "Shark Bites".

  10. Great to see Coach Tark at the arena! Hope you're a regular there this season as your recovery continues.

  11. It was great to see you and the Rebel alumni on Tuesday night, Coach. Having grown up here and being a fan of the Rebels since the rotunda days, it was like a family reunion. Thanks for bringing back so many wonderful memories.

  12. Worked hard? LOL!

None of these student athletics got a college degree. But they were seen spending their evenings doing homework in the jacuzzi with the moneyman "booster".

  13. 2zero, apparently you haven't seen the picture of LJ graduating that has been posted quite a bit since the news of the celebration. Plenty of other players graduated also.

You also have your memory a little fuzzy with the jacuzzi picture, but I'll choose not to elaborate.

  14. Funny, LJ "graduated" and was a no show. Exactly when did he graduate? Not under Tark's term.

    Plenty of others...LOL!

Undefeated and still a loser program.

  15. Boston Globe sports reporter Jackie MacMullen, who's trying to sell a book about Magic and Bird, gave a speech today in Boston. An audience member asked her: Who's the biggest jerk in the NBA to deal with? She replied, "Larry Johnson. You know, Grandmama? He's the biggest jacka*s I've ever been around." I'm just repeating what I heard ...

  16. 2Zero you are an idiot!!!!

LJ did come back and graduate, that is the main thing. What program do you like? Do all their players graduate? Freakin hypocrite.

And about the hot tub picture, funny thing is 2 of the 3 players seen in the photo were members of the 90 title team that won the title by 30 points!!!! Hunt was the other guy in the photo and his team went undefeated the next year!! The only game they lost he was the star player for the Rebels!!

Back up off this site Zero!!!

  17. @Brockton,

I heard from a good source that the only reason that Jackie MacMullen is saying that LJ is a jack@$$ is because she made advances toward LJ that he turned down..............I'm just repeating what I heard.
