Paris Hilton and the cast of Repo! The Genetic Opera.

* Many of Paris Hilton’s friends were surprised with her shocking confirmation yesterday that she and beaufriend Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden had “broken up for good.” However, all of them were relieved and happy that the 10-month romance had ended permanently.

Paris and Benji seemed the perfectly contented couple in love at the premiere of her new "Repo! The Genetic Opera" movie two weeks ago here at Planet Hollywood. Behind the scenes, however, I was told that they’d been feuding over his “possessiveness, over protectiveness and control-freak demands.”

“To be honest, there weren’t many in the Paris circle who liked him because of that. He’s a real nice guy, but there’s this jealous streak. She was literally a prisoner to his demands and orders,” one of her closest girlfriends revealed. “He’d even tell her to only smoke when hidden away from photographers. He doesn’t drink, so he wanted her to stop, too. He didn’t want her going out partying with friends and instead stay home just the two of them for private dinners.

“She needed to get her freedom back. You can’t handcuff a person, smother them and try to completely change them.”

Apparently the couple had argued about his possessiveness, which was also blamed for his previous breakup from Australian actress Sophie Monk. Friends say that he promised Paris he’d change and to give him another chance at curbing it.

While Benji was at a New York recording session, Paris was seen dancing in a Miami nightclub earlier this week with former boyfriend Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos Jr. It allegedly sent Benji into a rage that sparked the actual breakup.

Lance Bass poses in front of the Paris resort.

* It was a two-continent countdown using planning with military precision -- and "Dancing With the Stars" finalist Lance Bass was right at the center of it!

The wine harvest was just six weeks ago. The new Beaujolais wines arrived from Paris, France, a day ago, and the cases were transported yesterday to our local distributor. Then in a scene right out of 007 James Bond, a Stars and Stripes helicopter gingerly maneuvered between the Strip’s skyscrapers.

For the first time in history, the chopper picked its way over the back roofs of Paris Las Vegas and set down exactly at 11:59 p.m. on the closed-off forecourt area by the Arc de Triomphe entranceway. The airlift was a success -- and right on time!

As the seconds ticked down for former ’N Sync pop star Lance Bass, two can-can girls high-heeled it to the helicopter, retrieved the two first magnum bottles of the beauj and ran back to the main stage set up on the Strip outside the casino’s Ah Sin restaurant. Winemaker Georges Duboeuf’s export director, Yann Bourigault, had flown in from France to uncork the first magnums!

Then exactly at 12:01 this morning, Lance poured the first glass, made a toast and flipped the switch to turn Paris’ 50-story authentic, architecturally reproduced replica of the Eiffel Tower red.

Lance told me: “It’s the first time I’ve done something like this -- and I’ve never had Beaujolais before. It’s a great excuse to get to Vegas because I love this city so much. I don’t really need an excuse to get here, but doing it this way is fun -- and I’m all about fun."

DeAnna Pappas.

* Former 'Bachelorette" star DeAnna Pappas is newly single and ready to mingle -- again! She flew into Vegas for a girls’ only celebration at the new Rok Vegas nightclub in New York-New York. DeAnna palled up with "Sunset Tan’s" Heidi Cortez. Gorgeous Ford model and aspiring actress Brittny Gastineau was celebrating her 25th birthday at Rok, so it was to be expected that the stunners would all wind up together in one very large “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” pleasure-packed party.

* It might just be the biggest party of the year, but Lindsay Lohan won’t be there with DJ gal pal Samantha Ronson as they were a week ago here in Las Vegas at Pure nightclub. Instead, Samantha will be spinning for Las Vegas’ Janet Jackson, obviously recovered from her medical problems that KO’d her recent pop tour, along with our Hard Rock Hotel restaurant kingpins Robert De Niro and Nobu Matsuhisa.

Cole Hauser.

* Handsome actor Cole Hauser hosted a party at LAX nightclub in the Luxor after dining at Social House in Treasure Island. He just missed former "Baywatch" star Jeremy Jackson, who was hosting his own festivities downstairs at the new Christian Audigier nightclub. For the record, Jeremy stuck to Fiji water and Red Bull. Midway between LAX and Club A, Laguna Beach actor Dieter Schmitz partied at Pure nightclub in Caesars Palace.

* Under orders from a British High Court judge, King of Pop Michael Jackson will fly to London on Saturday. The on-and-off Las Vegas resident will then appear in court Monday to be grilled by lawyers in a court case brought by Sheikh Abdullah al-Khalifa, who wants Michael to repay him $7 million.

The son of the King of Bahrain claims Michael reneged on a contract for a new album and an autobiography -- and that the money was an advance! Jackson’s lawyers claim the money was purely a gift from a generous rich man and that no project was ever finalized.
