Casino tax initiative backers: Gamers fearful of letting people vote on it

The Nevada Resort Association is "afraid" that voters will have their say on taxing larger casinos, so the gaming lobbying group wants to stop it from getting to the ballot.

That's the argument encased in a response brief filed this week with a Carson City judge by backers of a proposed gaming tax initiative that would add a fourth tier and tax the bigger casinos.

In her brief, attorney Maggie McLetchie agrees to minor changes in the "Description of Effect," but vehemently disagrees with the Nevada Resort Association's attempt to try to ensure the tax plan never goes before voters. The idea, proposed by businessman Monte Miller, would create a 9 percent gross gaming tax levy on casinos grossing more than $250,000 a month.

McLetchie's brief is at right.
