Governor responds to Nye County bid to take the nuclear waste dump

UPDATE: Today, Gov. Brian Sandoval threw cold water on Nye County's invitation with a letter to Secretary Chu saying Nevada "will not consent to an interim storage facility or repository being considered in the state." Letter at right.

In a letter this week to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Nye County has asked to voluntarily host the nation's high-level nuclear waste repository.

"Nye County, Nevada hereby provides notice to you the Secretary of Energy, that we consent to host the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain consistent with our previous resolutions (attached) that support the safe and successful development of the Yucca Mountain Repository," the March 6 letter said.

And it later says: "We ask that you invite Nye County to meet with you or your designated representatives to initiate the cooperative negotiation process the BRC recommends. We want to explore and define potential incentives, and move this urgently needed program forward as promptly as possible."

The letter, signed by Lorinda Wichman, the chair of the Nye County Commission, is at right.

The missive comes as Chu told a congressional panel that work at Yucca Mountain could restart if a court order were issued

About Yucca being dead, Senator Reid.....
