Firefighters’ damage control spin machine revs up before hearing

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 | 9:51 a.m.

In advance of today's Clark County Commission hearing on sick leave abuse, the county fire union sent a message to its members and the elected folks. Whenever people say it's not time to point fingers, it's because they don't want fingers pointed at them.

Both documents at right.

  1. what a joke? Like they never new their firefighters were abusing sick leave until the arbitration. I know firefighters and have heard them brag about sick leave, overtime, and how much money they've made.

  2. Let's not forget about the people who negotiated, then approved the contracts that allow this. How many of them are still on the Clark County Council? Would you really vote for them again or for a higher office? (How much did this contribute to Rory's loss?)

  3. The time has come for CCFD staff to face punishment for thier crimes against the public. It's kind of funny that the loud mouth fire fighters that were posting opinions about this matter at the onset of it all now have nothing to say. I would hope the penalties are harsh and swift, and make an example of what happens when you steal. Kudos to Commissioner Sisolak for exposing this abuse and shame on the rest of the commisioners for doing absolutely nothing. I know who doesn't get my vote next election.

  4. Fire 'em all!

  5. This IS why the public resist tax increases. Trust in our public services has been lost.

The firemen's pay in NOT a new problem but has come to light only in the face of budget issues.

Keep examining County expenses and you will find more waste, fraud and abuse.... the school district should be next.

  6. The firefighters and their union were certainly willing to point fingers and cast blame in Rory Reid's recent campaign -- following him around at events with their "black truck."

Shameful guys. You've totally lost whatever little public respect and support you had left.

  7. Unlike the state, the county and other local governments are hamstrung by NRS288 which mandates collective bargaining and binding arbitration. Combine that with public employee unions either endorsing or opposing candidates that negotiate the contracts and you have a fiscal disaster on order.
