GOP fires first shot in redistricting battle in Legislature

But the final battle surely will be fought nearby in the state Supreme Court chambers. Or in federal court, perhaps?

The Democrats and Hispanics already are up in arms about the packing of Latinos into one district -- I have heard differing opinions from Hispanic leaders on this strategy. Dilution of strength vs. likelihood of election?

The congressional map looks strange -- I suppose the Democratic one will, too -- with two large districts (in land mass) splitting the rurals (talk about dilution of strength) and two districts in urban Las Vegas. The thinking: Two districts with heavily GOP cow counties in them gives GOP chance to take two out of four. The Dems -- at least the more aggressive ones who see the 60,000-voter advantage -- think their party nominees should have a shot at 3 and, Sharron Angle willing, maybe four.

Lots of legislative district maneuvering here, too, but I'll save that for another day.

Here are the GOP maps

And at right are the population demographics of the GOP-drawn districts.
