GOP Senate nominee Sharron Angle is distributing an "Open Letter to Seniors" to rebut supposed "disinformation" from Team Reid. So now instead of wanting to "phase out" Social Security or "eliminate" Medicare — those are her words — she wants to "keep the promise of Social Security," presumably before it is phased out, and see to it that "Medicare is efficiently managed," presumably before it is eliminated.
The math here is quite something as it still doesn't add up how younger folks could opt out and payroll taxes would be sufficient to keep the system solvent or where she will find $2.5 trillion to replace what she calls "IOUs," which actually are government bonds.
The letter is at right.
Shouldn't there be a flip-flop limit?
Crazy Angle seems to be abusing the system.
I haven't seen any actual details on Sharron Angle's proposal, but if she plans to distribute the current value of the government securities held for the OASDI and HI to the various folks who've been paying in, creating individual investment accounts for them, and having all future FICA taxes going to the accounts, then consider a few facts:
Current value of the OASDI and HI "trust fund:" $2.4T
FICA taxes collected each month: $80B
Current total market cap of all stocks traded on U.S. exchanges: $8T
Percentage of all stock wealth held by the top 1%: 38.3%
Percentage of all stock wealth held by the top 10%: 81.2%
Increasing the number of dollars chasing the shares in circulation will increase the value of those shares, without changing the intrinsic value of the companies themselves. This will be a tremendous windfall to those who already are heavily invested in stocks, and to executives whose compensation includes a lot of stock options and grants. The higher-priced shares will reduce the effective yield on dividends, but that only hurts those who hold dividend stocks for income, right? In other words, wealth will be transferred to those who are already well-to-do.
I'm sure you could find other names for it, Sharron, but that will be the effect.
Here's some more math for you: 14.2% unemployment, highest foreclosure, bankruptcy,and drop-out rates.Harry Reid has led us straight to the bottom! He is destroying Nevada and America. Harry Reid is far too extreme!
Just in case you don't know, Federal employees do NOT contribute to Social Security, They have their own private GOVERNMENT PENSION PROGRAM. Which amounts to a lot MORE than Social Security provides. I hope Sharron and her huband live well on the Government dole!!!

I have NO love for Harry Reid, I think he is an idiot on a quest to become a bigger idiot, but Ms. Angle wants to slap retirees and disabled in the face, never considering that it was their tax money, their sweat and tears that helped build this country to where it is today, don't count the gov. corruption here, we would be sitting pretty without that. It is my suggestion that NV. vote for the independent candidate 100%, to show every future representative and president, that social security should not be touched, don't even think about it, to think about it is sudden death on election day. No privatization would carry the full faith and credit of the US treasury.

Not sure if anyone sees this, but Sharron Angle seems to realize she made a mistake.
She has enfuriated the senior citizens of Nevada with her remarks that go back and forth, flip flop, get rid of it, "privatize" it, no, wait, I meant "personalize" it, and then continuing on with rhetoric that harkens back to old, failed, meaningless Republican phrases of policies that are nonsensical and went nowhere like "lockbox."
Sharron Angle believes Senator Reid is spreading "disinformation." How can it be "disinformation" if Senator Reid is repeating what she said? She believes this stuff and Senator Reid is pointing it out. But, I guess, in the paranoid campaign of Sharron Angle, Senator Reid could say hi, wonderful sunny day, isn't it? to her and she'll even explode at imaginary slights and proclaim that Senator Reid, along with President Obama and Speaker Pelosi, is promoting global warming and he looked at me funny too!
One thing for sure is this: The senior citizens clearly see she keeps changing her mind. And when someone does that about an important issue like Social Security, it means they want to get their hands on it. And when they flip flop like a fish out of water, that means if they do get grubby fingers on it...they'll screw it up beyond belief.
Also, anyone with half a mind knows that Sharron Angle's position has been, is now and always will be that she wants it gotten rid of.
So, this "Open Letter to Seniors" is readily apparent.
She screwed up and now realizes that basically saying a program that keeps just about 20 million senior citizens in America above the poverty level and a program that has proved to be wildly popular and is not in need of any changes at all...is probably a bad idea to talk about. Especially, if she wants to get elected.
And the seniors...the ones who will come out and vote...see this. And they are preventing her from walking back her insane comments about it. It's too late. What was said by her was said. And she proclaimed it out loud and clear. Walking it back don't show she really means it.
Just another segment of Nevada voters that Sharron Angle has demonized. And they feel she is going after them.
Just like the Hispanic American voters of Nevada, chalk up the seniors to march en masse to the voting booth with vengeance in their eyes to make sure they vote her out.
Sharron Angle's only accomplishment so far is to make Dick Morris, Karl Rove and whatever other Republican handler goon go absolutely bonkers in trying to manage her. She does manage to put them in damage control mode every day.

Whether you love her or hate her, Nevada's problem is America's problem and that problem is named Harry Reid.
Harry Reid is one of three leaders in government who have brought 9+% unemployment to the country and 14+% unemployment to Vegas. Vegas leads in unemployment because the rest of the country either has no money or is too afraid to spend any they do have out of fear of losing their jobs, to come and spend that money to enjoy what Vegas and Nevada have to offer.
Harry Reid and the agenda he has pushed has caused the agony you are experiencing. To think the person that caused your agony is going to reverse himself in order to fix it, is just plain foolish.
OUR problem is Harry Reid. Yet, even though we in the rest of the country know this, we are powerless to do anything about it.
Harry Reid's supposed "clout" has brought Vegas to its knees. Its time to take off the blinders and see that if you in Nevada fix the problem we all have, we can then come back to enjoy your state and spending our money to help fix the damage left over from Harry Reid.

This seemed unlikely, so I looked up the Social Security Wage Base and contribution percentages since 1951, to calculate the maximum any person might have paid into Social Security over that time period. Now, if you had been self-employed since 1951, paying both the employee's and employer's contribution, AKA the self-employment tax, and managed to earn at least as much as the wage base every year from 1951 through 2010, over that 60 year period, you would have paid in a total of $254,289.45. Note that if you were NOT self-employed, you would have paid in slightly more than half that amount, or about $129,000, over a period of 60 years.
If my assumptions are wrong, please advise.
@bookofdoubt, you present some very compelling statistics, but I have trouble linking them directly to Harry Reid. I think one could make a much better case for the cause of our financial problems being the result of massive deficit spending from 2001 through today, largely driven by voluntarily reduced tax revenues, massive defense spending, including two wars being paid for with supplemental appropriations during the Bush years, so the costs wouldn't appear on the budget, and the near collapse of the financial industry. By the way, the current deficit now includes the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, because President Obama added those costs back into the budget for everyone to see.
Shipping over two million jobs off shore over the last ten years probably contributed somewhat to the growing unemployment rate, but the real responsibility for high unemployment in Nevada lies with Nevadans, who have done almost nothing to diversify an economy largely dependent on the disposable income of visitors. Except for Harry Reid, of course, who has been trying to bring green energy and transportation projects here for the last few years.
Anyway, that's my take on your statistics. I realize you figure it differently, much as I once blamed Santa Claus for not bringing me a pony, but you are entitled to your opinion.

So, you figure all those people without insurance should just stay home and die, so you won't be inconvenienced? God obviously chose them to be without coverage, so they should just succumb to His Will? Like that?
The truth is, these folks currently go to emergency rooms, where they have to be treated whether they have coverage or not, and their costs get spread around to everyone else. When everyone has coverage, they'll be able to go to a regular provider, and overall costs will be lower. That won't drive insurance rates down, because insurance companies will manage to keep them up, but over time, the system will become more efficient.
Angle is toast.

For the first time in 75 years Social Security is paying out more than it is bring in, that cannot be good, look at the nation debt. Sharron Angles want to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. Just by repealling the Health Care Reform will restore $400 million back into Medicare. Senior don't let Reid's deceptive and misinformation campaign ads sway you. Sharron Angles may not be the best choice, but the only choice to protect Social Security and Medicare and reduce the national debt.

You're mistaken. There have been several years where Social Security benefits paid have exceeded tax revenues (FICA), most recently 1983. This year, it's more about the persistently high unemployment than about social Security, since the FICA tax is levied against earned income. Also, the national debt is not impacted by Social Security benefits, although the Social Security trust fund holds about $2.3T of that debt. The Treasury Department issues Bonds and Notes to provide cash for current operations of the federal government, and FICA taxes in excess of what are required to pay benefits are invested in those Bond and Notes.
I support raising the Wage Base, which is the upper limit on which the OASDI portion of FICA taxes are paid, from the current $106,500 to $150,000 or possibly a bit more. This will significantly improve the funding for the system without increasing the burden on either retirees or those at the bottom end of the pay scale. I suspect few realize that a worker earning $50,000 a year pays a significantly greater percentage of her income in FICA than a worker earning $500,000 a year.
Gbigs, here's a link to the Social Security Administration's summary of their annual reports on OASDI and HI. "The outlook for Medicare has improved substantially because of program changes made in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (the "Affordable Care Act" or ACA) ... the combined OASDI Trust Funds have a projected 75-year actuarial deficit equal to 1.92 percent of taxable payroll, 0.08 percentage point smaller than last year's estimate." So, things are getting better under the Obama administration, despite the drag of high unemployment.

Pmontg53, if you've never worked with actuaries before, they are the the folks who make insurance possible. They analyze mortality and morbidity data and use it to create the tables that determine how much you'll pay for life insurance, annuities, health insurance, and even auto insurance. They can't tell you how long you'll live, but they can tell you how many of the people born in 1953 we should expect to die in 2011, 2012, and so on. There are very few politicians I'd trust to balance my checkbook, but every retirement plan, insurance company, and HMO employs or retains actuaries as consultants.
The next time someone tells you Social Security is in trouble, or not in trouble, ask them to explain how the primary insurance amount (PIA) is calculated. If they don't know, then assume they don't know enough to hold a qualified opinion on the matter.
