RJ massively bungles story on changes at LV ONE

Some of you may have noticed that I have stopped taking time to point out the myriad mistakes/hypocrisy/inanities that characterize the Flash Follow-Up Journal on a regular basis. I have decided to generally ignore the relative irrelevancy that is that news organization. But when it makes a mistake – or series of mistakes in one story that involves your favorite Flasher – I cannot stand silent.

So a brief break from my vow of silence for this:

MorefodderforRJcorrectionsbox

After being informed by my producer, Dana Gentry, the RJ fixed the headline, which said “Las Vegas ONE,” the name of the station, had been shut down. (You can see in the URL the mistake that was made.)

But the story is still rife with errors:

1. News ONE at 9 is not “another Greenspun Interactive division project.” It is a newscast on Las Vegas ONE.

2. The program did not feature “interviews by political commentator Jon Ralston.” It was anchored by Jeff Gillan. Occasionally, Gillan played snippets of “Face to Face,” which is a program featuring interviews by political commentator Jon Ralston. We know the RJ knows this. How do we know? The newspaper steals from the program all the time, sans credit.

3. “Beyond that, questions are being raised by those in the industry about the present viability of video reporting on newspaper Web sites.” Why is that relevant at all to News One at 9 being shut down?

4. The story of the cancellation is attributed to “according to local media reports.” The only report before this one was by RJ Columnist Norm Clarke on his blog and his Twitter account – both of which had to be corrected after he was informed that he had it wrong and that Las Vegas ONE was not off the air. Bizarre.

Despite being alerted to these errors—or perhaps done a modicum of research beforehand -- the Review-Journal editors and reporter Hubble Smith have yet to correct them. Why?

Now after that point of personal privilege, back to that vow of silence….

  1. LV One News at 9 is the ONLY newscast we watch.

Face to Face is also a daily program we watch.

LV One can not go away.

  2. Most newspapers' ineptness at video is like video journalists not being able to talk in front of a lense. Mental intertia is always ugly.

  3. Why is there not a news story about this -- or the closing of the Henderson Home News and the accompanying layoffs -- in the Sun or online? Sounds like the LVRJ isn't the only paper practicing shoddy journalism!

  4. Ralston,

Sherm and Mitchell are incompetent blithering idiots. Do they have any paid staff other than John Smith and Morrison?

They are a regurgitated AP feed shop with a gaggle of unpaid (uneducated, uninformed and ill-equipped also) bloggers that make Glenn Beck look sane.

Who is Hubble Smith? Never seen his byline before.

Anyway, my point is you should only report on the RJ when they FAIL to bungle, mangle and/or distort a story. That event is far less likely to happen.

  5. Good point on the Sun not reporting the demise of its sister media outlets, though it's also true the R-J made mistakes in its reports.

The bigger picture is the shrinking local media. It's a shame. The 9 p.m. news and Jeff Gillan's anchoring were about the best in town. Don't get why LV One or TV-8 couldn't find a way to keep this and Jeff on the air.

  6. Ummm, check the front page. There's now a story up on The Home News going bye-bye. It's sad to lose this and "News ONE at 9", but I really hope The Sun and the rest of the Las Vegas ONE programs keep going. The R-J is really a lame excuse for a "newspaper", and I'm not saying that just because the editorial board swings to the right of Attila the Hun. Unlike the now defunct Rocky Mountain News and once independent Wall Street Journal (at least their news division), The R-J does no real reporting of merit and wouldn't be worth reading if it weren't for John L. Smith and NORM!

Oh yeah, and I only occasionally buy the print edition on weekends so I can read The Sun. ;-)

  7. LOL......Ralston is raggin on the LVRJ for getting the story wrong.

Here is the Sun's verison of the story:

    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .

Boy that sure was a quick read.

The Sun did not make one single mistake in its version of the story.

  8. ralston ...the watchdog of the rival newspaper. What a great public service..like he's never made a mistake.
