The respected Pew Center on the States prepared a report looking at other states besides stricken California that are hurting disproportionately. Not a lot new here for Nevadans who have been following this, but more proof, based on some measurements the Pew folks used, that we are down and not going up anytime soon.
I have attached the report at right.
Technorati

According to the Pew report.....
The Pew Center released a national report on the states' economic woes and listed Nevada among the top 10 states. These are states that have been hit hard by foreclosures, increases in unemployment and the Medicaid caseload and declining tax revenues.
It predicts Nevada will face a $3 billion state government budget deficit by 2011. Nevada will be the last state in the nation to recover from the recession and state government is among those suffering the worst.
Nevada leaders thought for too long that gaming was recession-proof and that as a result.....Nevada is going to suffer longer than any other state.
Economists predict it will take five or more years to get back to normal.
As I've said before, "were there is no vision, the people perish".
Our leaders have no vision. They should listen to the Prophet AT ONCE to save Las Vegas and the state:
1) Work to legalize prostitution in downtown Las Vegas ASAP! Make a red light district abutting the "fremont street experience", tear down building, make a safe area such as the ones in Amsterdam. Illegal prostitution (which costs the state billions a year in lost taxes) is also dangerous (only clean, disease free hookers would be able to work).
2. Exploit Solar Energy. We have land. We have sun. We have stimulus money available for solar programs. Get some of that money to build a manufacturing facility, largest in the US, that can build the highest tech solar panels in the USA and also sell them to other parts of the world. Make this a NV-private sector joint venture with profits being shared between industry and the state. The state gives the "can do" private companies the facility and tax breaks so that it can make money from the get-go.
3. Biologically engineer a pot plant that lacks the substance that makes people high (TCH?) Grow that hemp in large areas outside of town (we have plenty of land). Create these hemp forests abutting hemp factories. Hemp is easy to grow, it's a weed for Judas's sake, and it has numerous useful applications. For one, we can use to make bio-fuels. Hemp requires only a fraction of the amount of water that corn and other crops used to make bio-fuels use. Hemp can make paper, clothing, etc. Let NV become the hemp capital of the world! All that is required is some simple bio engineering and education. Once people learn that the founding fathers all grew and smoked pot, and that it was actually required by law to grow pot back in the day, people will change their minds on pot. However, I know the power of the drug companies and know that they don't want people to self medicate with pot, so growing a normal pot plant is not in the cards. So the Prophet suggest growing a non "drug" pot for use in alt fuels and other industries that we can pioneer and allow to flourish in our land rich state.
My recommendations could turn things around here within months. Free 'vision' for our blind leaders. "But Prophet, people will never accept pot or legal prostitution in Las Vegas, this is a family community"! And Pharump isn't a family community? Are we not branding this dying city "Sin City"? Turning this into a real Sin City is the only thing that will save it according to my vision. Otherwise, it continue on it's downward spiral as we no longer live in our parents world, and the future is predictable. Capitalism is on the way out. Sin however is the oldest profession, and will never die. Let it be written, let it be done!
BTW, if these things are not implemented, I predict:
1) Cut cops, firefighters pay by 40-50% next time contract are to renew. With a 20% unemployment rate at that time, the out of work construction workers and soon to be legal illegas (I predict Obama will give them all amnesty next year) who will be happy to do the work for $20 an hour instead of the current $40 they make.
2) Fire a ton of teachers, education admin jobs, etc. Our population will continue to shrink if we don't implement what I suggest. We won't need as many teachers. Fire 1/2 the teachers, increase classroom sizes, close some schools all together.
3) Cut the pay of all gov workers, DMV to the meter bee-ouches.
4) Cut all welfare programs. No money, sorry. Kids will have to go hungry.
That is what this state faces unless they follow my suggestions. Let it be written, let it be done. (I say that to put my suggestions out there so that they come to pass. Angels and demons are both listening to the Prophet)
Sergio: Here's fifty cents. Walk to a phone booth. Call your mother. Inform her you are suing her for parental malpractice for nothing else explains your "contribution" to the public dialog on statewide issues.
Ignore my suggestions at your own demise. The Prophet has spoken.
Try a nice glass of milk, Sergio.
We have Harry Reid, that's depressing in of itself. Poor leaders produce poor results. We need a change. We need a leader. November 2, 2010 Let's send Harry Reid back to Search Light!

...I just drove to Laughlin and back Tuesday, stopping as always at the Searchlight Casino for that always great ten cent cup of coffee,(eleven cents to go) and a look at the last of the one armed bandits.
...The staff is always friendly and its always a pleasure to step back in time fifty years for less than a dollar. It's a welcome break from a monotonous drive and be alert for Metros enforcement of the quick 45--35--25 MPH speed limits. Enjoy the Java and please don't send Harry back to Searchlight.

As an "outsider" who is contemplating moving my business to Nevada, I appreciate the varied comments posted here. I agree that our leaders have failed to lead, but also observe that we willingly followed. It never helps to"shoot the messenger" which is what I am seeing here. If Nevadans cannot look past the previous failures in leadership and agree on a mutual vision for the state, then I would do as well moving my business to Detroit!
