Gibbons asks Obama to facilitate his new renewable energy plan

Gov. Jim Gibbons has sent a letter to President Obama to change the IRS code to allow special funding for his new scheme, which includes a nonprofit chaired by crony Monte Miller, to make Nevada a renewable energy center.

One note: Gibbons still can't spell Obama's first name. The news release referred to "Barrack Obama," the second time in a couple of months the governor has done so. (He got it right in the letter.) I have posted Gibbons' letter at right.

  1. First, Obama is busy trying to change the IRS code for HIS buddies, he doesn't have time to listen to the Gibbon or anybody else.

Second, read the paper, nobody wants that worthless energy crap in their back yard. With whiny people abundant in the US we will never be energy independent.

  2. Getalife:

Energy independence is easy to achieve, although it is also unnecessary. The US has abundant petroleum and natural gas reserves. The Dept. of Interior estimates that there are 31.1 billion barrels of onshore oil that is inaccessible due to government restrictions, 115.43 billion barrels of restricted offshore oil, and 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from shale rock. In addition, the US could produce as much energy as it wanted through nuclear power. The biggest barrier is that reprocessing the fuel rods was banned by the Carter administration - forcing us to store the spent rods like retards.

On the other hand, if Americans can import their energy even cheaper than they can produce it, then what's the point? We currently import a large supply of our natural gas from Canada, for instance. The caution I would give is to make energy companies bear the full risks of their own investments - including geopolitical risk. Otherwise, you find yourself in the quagmire of subsidizing private risk with military presence, which is stupid.

  3. Geoffrey,

Thanks for proving my point. I have a windmill farm in Searchlight I'm trying to sell.

  4. Geoff-

    Please consider:

    1. Using our fresh water resources for oil shale or nuclear is not a smart way to go. The water we rely on for our own uses shouldn't be wasted on these energy and water intensive processes.

    2. There is NO viable solution for nuclear waste. Even the french are nervous about what to do with the weapons grade plutonium they have stored after reprocessing the spent fuel.

    3. Drilling for oil in America, which most experts agree that we only have 3% of the world's reserves, will not get us to energy independence. If you subscribe to the inevitability of peak oil, then you should know that we will NEVER drill our way out of this.

    4. We can use less energy as consumers and switch to alternative fuels, such as cellulostic ethanol and hopefully some day, hydrogen.

    5. Oil shale and nuclear require more subsidies (our tax dollars) than ALL renewable energy technologies currently employed.

If you want energy independence for our country then you should get behind renewable energy and efficiency, not water intensive and highly subsidized technologies that destroy our natural environment and put our country at risk.
