The 2009 season is finally here …

I've been waiting for this game since the last game last year at San Diego State. It's crazy how bad we all want to play this game. I think it's felt like a lot longer, just because of the fact that we ended last season with a rotten taste in our mouths. That's made it longer. Being my senior year, I've taken every day and worked harder than I've ever worked.

We've heard from outside of the team, people talking about looking forward to games like Oregon State and Hawaii and the Mountain West season, since it'll be a strong league this year. As far as the team goes, we're just ready to play football. It's been such a long time since we've been able to hit somebody else, and to be under the lights and play football, I think it's just playing for the love of the game right now. It doesn't matter who we play against right now. We just want to play against somebody else.

You've got to see Sacramento State as a team that is sort of like us, in a way, in that they faced adversity last year.

In a lot of games, they were neck-and-neck with their opponents, such as with Colorado State and pretty high-level teams. For them, they've just got to get over that hump.

In this game, it takes a while to win. That's how it's been here. I thought we were gonna come in and win games right away earlier in my career, but it doesn't work like that in football. There's a whole recruiting process, you need the right coaches, and I think that's what's going on with them.

We're not underestimating them or anything like that, because they definitely have the right athletes. I haven't seen a lot of their type of play before. I know they've circled us on their schedule, that's the thing.

Sacramento State is going to be playing up for this game.

I'm excited. Earlier, we heard that they ran the ball all the time, but with their veteran quarterback, we're expecting them to throw it a lot. I'm excited to get going after the quarterback in my first extended time at defensive end.

Hopefully I don't forget all the technique coach Patterson taught me. I'll play like I know how to play. Of course, I have some fine-tuning things to take care of at defensive end, because I've never stayed at d-end for an entire college game before or the majority of the time.

As for other games I'm looking forward to this weekend, I have a couple of buddies at Boston College. One of my friends, Wes Davis, he's a safety. I know all the BC linebackers. I love to watch them.

I always love to watch San Diego State, coming from San Diego. I know all the guys from that team.

And the rest of the Mountain West. We know those guys from being at media day, and just meeting these guys, seeing them after years and years of playing, I'm definitely gonna watch them. It's exciting not just for us, but for the entire conference.

It's college football season. It's the best time of the year, to me.

  1. Jason is a stand up guy and writes well. GOD be with you and all of us.

  2. I will be there on Saturday. You are the vocal leader on the defense and I cannot wait to see you flying all over the field. Play by example and show the young players how this game was intended to be played.

Good luck. Stay Healthy. Most of all, WIN!!!

  3. I have been waiting since that game in San Diego, too. I have high hopes that this is the group of players, coaches, and year where we will be going "bowling". I am going to where the bowl is. I have been waiting for SOOO Long! Go Rebels.

  4. Let's go bowling. I will travel to see ya'll unless it's in Hawaii. Sorry, times are tough.

I was at the LV Bowl in 2000 when the Rebs annihilated Arkansas. It was one of my proudest Rebel moments in my life, and it was by far the most proud I have been as a UNLV football fan. I would love to see that again, no matter the bowl. Six is the minimum. Let's hit it!!!

  5. Hello Jason! I'm glad to see that you are a great leader for your team. Your blog is great! I look forward to hearing even better things as UNLV begins their 2009 season. God bless and keep you in good health!

  6. I hope your ankle is all right for this Saturday's game. We'll need you to put some hurtin' on Jaquizz Rogers. Rest up and get everyone pumped for this week's game. I know I'll be.
