Sea World not a bad spot for MWC tourney

NOW

It's a sports writer's prerogative to change his mind.

I've changed mind (again).

I've said time and again that Las Vegas is the only place the Mountain West should ever hold its postseason basketball tournament. But if it wants to play it in San Diego once every three years or so, fine by me.

For starters, Cox Arena was rocking during Saturday night's Rebels-San Diego State game. It was LOUD in there. Plus, the SDSU student section was easily the most boisterous and creative one I've seen all year. To paraphrase what Bill Murray said in "Stripes," now those are some cowboys I'd like to party with. Especially the Geico lizard and the guy dressed like a giant banana. And the Joker.

Plus, San Diego is a great destination city. Not as great as Las Vegas, of course. But there are things to do there, especially during the day. And could you imagine turning those Wyoming fans loose on the Gas Lamp Quarter after the game?

But the tournament should never be played in Utah or, for that matter, anywhere else where the little paper umbrella in your drink freezes like a 58-percent free-throw shooter in a one-point game.

THEN

Remember those awful yellow-and-brown Padres jerseys that Dave Winfield and Randy Jones wore? They were asking $370 a copy for them in the Petco Park highway robbery -- er, gift -- shop.

So I settled for Randy Jones' All Natural Original Baseball Barbecue Sauce in the 18-oz. bottle.

The guy behind the counter, who must make a commission on the yellow-and-brown jerseys, said I couldn't wear the barbecue sauce.

I told him he's never seen me eat barbecue.

  1. Nice, Ron. San Diego would be a good spot. Cox Arena is a little too small though. Wouldn't mind hitting the beaches then the game at night. Their student section wipes the floor with ours or any others in the conference, especially New Mexico, the average age in their student section is 53.

  2. It's too bad Cox Arena is so small and located out in the hinterlands.

But I bet folks from Laramie and Fort Collins would be up for some March basketball in Petco Park.

  3. Lenny: With about 12,000 seats, Cox might be a little small. But if they sell mostly all-tournament passes (like the WCC did at the Orleans), I think the numbers still work. Yes, their student section was impressive. Those kids seem to have a lot of fun. Re: New Mexico, how old do you suppose "The Snake" is. I think I remember some of his tattoos from "American Graffiti."

Rain: Folks from Laramie and Fort Collins are up for just about anything in March, provided it does not include snow and does include beer.
