Freeway billboards make strange bedfellows … or something like that

NOW

Another in a long line of "Only in Las Vegas" moments:

As I was driving to the World Women's Bowling Championships at Cashman Center Tuesday I came upon back-to-back billboards near the Eastern exit on the 95 freeway.

The first had Jackie Robinson's picture on it. "Here's to you Mr. Robinson," it said in huge letters. In smaller letters, there was a message about character and how we should all display some.

The second billboard, right behind it, had Ed Bernstein's picture on it. "Accident? Injury?" (or something to that effect) it said in huge letters. In smaller letters, there was a phone number belonging to the personal injury attorney.

As I continued driving to the bowling tournament, I wondered if the team from Kazakhstan would understand the incongruity in all of this.

THEN

While I would bet almost everybody remembers that Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play major league baseball in the modern era, I wonder how many people remember that Pumpsie Green was the first black player to wear a Boston Red Sox uniform some 12 years later?

Or that his real name was Elijah Jerry Green?
