Tim Neverett lands Pirates’ play-by-play job

NOW:

No more getting knocked off the top of the press box by a big gust of wind.

Tim Neverett, the longtime Las Vegas broadcaster who had moved on to The Mtn., the Mountain West Conference's full coverage sports network, and Versus, which also covers the Mountain West, has been named the Pittsburgh Pirates' new play-by-play broadcaster.

It couldn't have happened to a harder-working guy. Or a nicer one.

Neverett is the fourth former Las Vegas Stars/51s announcer to make the jump to the big leagues, joining Paul Olden, Ken Korach and Rich Waltz. He also called UNLV football games and got his start in Las Vegas as the voice of the defunct Las Vegas Thunder hockey team.

In addition to those assignments, Neverett has called a bunch of other sports during his 24 years in sports broadcasting, that, although not too numerous to list here, would still take up a lot of space.

THEN:

Yet another scene from "Seinfeld" that seems appropriate today:

GEORGE: I like sports. I could do something in sports.

JERRY: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. In what capacity?

GEORGE: You know, like the general manager of a baseball team or something.

JERRY: Yeah. Well, that -- that could be tough to get.

GEORGE: Well, it doesn't even have to be the general manager. Maybe I could be like, an announcer. Like a color man. You know how I always make those interesting comments during the game.

JERRY: Yeah. Yeah. You make good comments.

GEORGE: What about that?

JERRY: Well, they tend to give those jobs to ex-ballplayers and people that are, you know, in broadcasting.

GEORGE: Well, that's really not fair.
