The e-mails in recent weeks, from several friends, were delectable, as mouth-watering as Double-Doubles themselves.
Wednesday is the 60th anniversary of the opening of the first In-N-Out burger joint, in Baldwin Park, Calif. There are eight listed in the Las Vegas area.
An e-mail, touting that the franchise will sell its cheeseburgers and other fare at roll-back 1948 prices, has been widely circulated.
Cheeseburgers for 30 cents. Hamburgers for 25 cents. Fries for 15 pennies. Drinks for a dime. That’s the menu from Oct. 22, 1948. Colleagues have talked about stocking up and packing freezers.
But it’s a hoax, as In-N-Out explains on its corporate web site.
“You may be aware of a rumor about our menu prices being lowered for our anniversary on October 22nd. This rumor is untrue,” says in-n-out.com, in a tab on the upper right corner of its home page.
“We’ve always tried to keep our prices as low as possible in order to give our customers the greatest value. One of the ways we accomplish this is by not discounting and our anniversary is no exception. We’re sorry if this rumor has caused any confusion.”
It made an Urban Legends web site Oct. 8.
“Darn,” wrote one In-N-Out fan.
“Makes one wonder about what compels somebody to sit down, type this out and send it, knowing it’s not true,” wrote another Double-Double lover. “Maybe somebody had it in for the chain and wanted to cause some mischief?”
