Online charter high school workshops

A new online charter high school, offering students the opportunity to work from home at their own pace, will hold information sessions this weekend for Southern Nevada families.

Insight School of Nevada, sponsored by the State Board of Education, offers college preparation, honors and Advanced Placement classes, as well as the state's standard courses required for graduation. Students from all 17 of the state’s school districts are eligible to enroll. Charter schools receive the same state funding as traditional public campuses. There is no tuition.

One of the school’s organizers is Gary Waters, who retired from the education board in 2006 after three terms. Waters, a licensed therapist, said the school intends to help students who may be struggling with emotional or behavioral issues that have interfered with their academic success.

The computer-based school will offer in-person counseling services at its administrative office, as well as daily online contact with a mentor.

The school hopes to enroll 350 students for the 2008-09 academic year. They will be provided with home computers and high-speed Internet service.

The charter school’s partner, Oregon-based Insight Schools Inc., is an online learning company with eight high schools in eight states.
