Heavyweight boxer Felix Abner, a former Illinois state and Chicago Golden Gloves champion known as "The Problemsolver," looked cut and imposing. Looks, though, can be deceiving.
That's what former UNLV basketball player Kaspars Kambala faces in his professional boxing debut Friday night at the Orleans against Alvaro Morales, who beat Abner in November.
Morales (1-0-2) is flabby, jiggly and pudgy. At 270 pounds, he matches Kambala on the scales. The 6-foot-9 Kambala will tower over his 6-foot foe, but Morales has the experience and the skills to make it a long four rounds for the ex-Rebel. Fortunately, for Kambala, he has a strong jaw and a very high pain tolerance.
Update: Kambala perserved in his debut, fighting to a four-round draw. He vows to fight within the next month.
He says basketball is no longer on his radar. He hopes to someday battle for a heavyweight title. Trainer Richard Steele believes Kambala will be a force within six months.
