AG weighs in on Sierra-UnitedHealth merger

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, in a complaint filed jointly with the U.S. Justice Department, will require a $15 million charitable contribution of UnitedHealth Group in order for the company to merge with Sierra Health Services, the state's largest health insurance company.

Masto and the Justice Department are also requiring United to sell off its Las Vegas Medicare Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) market share in order for the deal to go through.

The charitable contribution will fund state mental health services, family resource centers and University Medical Center, Southern Nevada's only public hospital.

  1. Requiring a company to make a "donation" before you will approve their sale?

Is that like the Tobacco money went to health care after the state sued the tobacco companies?

Blackmail at its best by the government. This sale is going to make every taxpayer in Clark county pay higher insurance rates.
