The lunch-time buffet has long been a fixture at Board of Regents meetings. But earlier this week, regents chairman Michael Wixom announced that the era of the free, public lunch was ending.

Only regents, college presidents, the chancellor and vice chancellors of the university system, board lawyers, faculty senate chairs and student body presidents would get food, Wixom said.

So to lighten the mood at a meeting at UNR today, Chancellor Jim Rogers ordered a catered meal. He had staff at a local TV station he owns pack and deliver cloth lunch bags for himself and a handful of other personnel, including his vice chancellors.

Rogers got the Superman lunch bag with “Jimmy” on it. It contained a sandwich, potato chips and animal crackers.

Maurizio Trevisan, an executive vice chancellor, got Elmo. Mike Reed, a vice chancellor, got Spiderman.

Rogers said with all the talk about “those that we were going to feed, and those that we were not going to feed,” he decided that in his office, “We would bring our own.”

His joke got a few good laughs.

And then the meeting adjourned for lunch, and attendees filed downstairs to buy sandwiches at Port of Subs.
