Marie Osmond is daring as Donny rests his derriere

Wrap Party

Flamingo Las Vegas headliners Donny & Marie Osmond perform at the closing-night party for IPW 2013 at the Garden for the Gods pool at Caesars Palace on June 12, 2013.

Perhaps the most obvious of the innumerable rear-end jokes to be made at the expense of Donny Osmond is the guy really does bust his butt to put on a show.

The male half of the Donny & Marie show at Flamingo Las Vegas has suffered a torn gluteus maximus and has been sidelined for at least two weeks. The little-bit-rock-and-roll end of the sibling stage show aggravated an existing injury while leaping on the piano during a performance about a week ago. He tried to play through the pain but has not been onstage since Tuesday night.

This is the sort of injury that lands even pro athletes on the disabled list. As Marie described it from the stage Saturday night, it is a case of the muscle tearing from the bone.

Aye!

Donny has since undergone surgery and is “resting” his affected area, as Marie puts it. Stepping in for the shows this weekend was Merrill Osmond, who sang in duet with Marie and also performed a couple of solo numbers, "Crazy Horses” being the highlight.

Merrill has a real Kenny Rogers-esque disposition, and his meandering from the script (Saturday he talked of how U.S. soldiers in Iraq found a vault full of Marie albums, posters and even dolls in a presidential palace) has his sister saying, “Just sing, Merrill.”

This act could be billed as the “M&M&M” show (Marie, Merrill, Mormon). The plan is for Merrill to be in the show through the end of this month, and another possible singer (yet to be specified) is being considered to pinch-hit for Donny.

Even with her brother’s last-second contribution, the show is in the primary care of Marie until Donny returns. There is a sense that she wants to make some butt jokes but doesn’t succumb to too many jabs at her injured sibling.

Her best from Saturday: “I’ve always known he’s been a butt, but now he’s proven it.”
